As you would expect from the home of SEGA, the Japanese Dreamcast game library is the largest among all regions having 485 officially released game titles. From these, a whopping 353 titles are solely exclusive to Japan!
Some games, especially shooters and arcade ports, often don't require much knowledge of the Japanese language to navigate through. Games like Border Down and Cosmic Smash are prime examples where gameplay mechanics and visuals speak louder than text. For those games, it's more about a players engagement and experience...the language barrier doesn’t hinder a player’s ability to dive into the action!
On the flipside, menu-heavy RPGs, strategy games and dating simulators (of which there is an abundance) tend to rely on a lot of text for game-progression and story, making them quite challenging for non-Japanese speakers. The presence of Kanji in these titles can make it more difficult (and therefore pointless) to play, especially if there's no way to switch to an English menu or use translations
Some of the lesser-known games from the era, like Border Down, remain hidden gems in the broader gaming world compared to Ikaruga, which has been ported to various platforms and gained wider recognition over the years
Interestingly, games like these which may have had niche appeal at first, are now becoming more accessible to larger audiences thanks to modern digital distribution platforms
