...and many other bits and pieces!
Ah yes, the Dreamcast...released in 1998 (Japan) and 1999 (North America and Europe), it was Sega's final home video game console
Boasting advanced hardware for its time, supporting 3D graphics and utilising Sega's proprietary GD-ROM (Gigabyte Disc Read-Only Memory) disc system, it's extensive game library included popular titles such as Sonic Adventure, Shenmue and Soulcalibur. It was also notable for being the first home console to include a built-in modem for online gaming, supporting such titles as Phantasy Star Online and Quake III Arena
Then there was the Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit (VMU) which was as equally groundbreaking, combining memory storage with a handheld display and allowing players to manage game data and access interactive content on the go. Again, amazing tech for its time!
But as is often the case, all good things must come to an end and despite its innovative features and critical acclaim, the Dreamcast struggled with sales partly due to fierce competition from Sony's PlayStation 2. In 2001, Sega discontinued the console marking a significant shift in the company’s strategy as it transitioned to software development
Despite this however, the Dreamcast remains a beloved console among gaming enthusiasts for its pioneering contributions and unique game library...a library which is lovingly presented within these pages and which continues to be supported and expanded by both fans and independent developers to this very day!
Enjoy!
